Nirmala Sitharaman’s Singapore Visit Aims to Unlock New Avenues for Investment Cooperation

Date:

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is on an official visit to Singapore from October 9 to 11. During this visit, she will participate in several key meetings with Singapore’s top leadership. Discussions will focus on major areas of the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Sitharaman is scheduled to meet Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

According to the Ministry of Finance, these meetings will address key aspects of the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and focus on taking forward decisions made under the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR). Key topics of discussion include trade and investment, digital financial connectivity, capital markets, taxation, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, skill development, and the aviation sector.

The Ministry notes that Singapore is the largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India. Between April 2000 and March 2026, India received total FDI worth approximately US$ 194.68 billion from Singapore. Major Singaporean institutional investors, such as GIC and Temasek, have made significant investments across various sectors of the Indian economy.

As part of her engagements with the investment community, the Finance Minister will interact with prominent Singaporean and international investors, financial institutions, and industry leaders. These engagements will include a roundtable meeting with hedge fund and portfolio fund managers, as well as several Government-to-Business (G2B) meetings.

These meetings will provide an opportunity to exchange views with global investors on India’s growth journey, investment opportunities, and the evolving global economic and financial landscape.

According to the Ministry, Sitharaman will also hold separate meetings with senior executives from several leading global financial institutions, investment firms, and healthcare companies. These include meetings with top executives from GIC, Temasek, DBS Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, British International Investment (BII), IHH Healthcare, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), B Capital, HPS Investment Partners, SEB, Mitsui & Co., and TPG.

Platforms such as the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and GIFT City can offer new opportunities to increase Singaporean capital investment in India. Singapore’s participation can be further enhanced through investments and various funds. The Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with relevant ministries and industry bodies, will assist in connecting interested Singaporean investors with Indian companies, financial institutions, and state governments. Additionally, necessary support will be provided to advance potential investment projects.

This visit underscores India’s commitment to further strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and Singapore. Particular emphasis will be placed on leveraging the strong political ties between the two nations to foster investments, business partnerships, and tangible economic outcomes.
